Lake Kivu, located between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, is one of Africa’s most peaceful freshwater lakes.
Beyond its calm water and island views, the lake is also home to centuries-old fishing traditions that visitors can explore and photograph.
Joining a fishing tour on Lake Kivu lets you see how local fishermen work together on the open water, either under the stars or in the warm daylight. It’s one of the most authentic experiences for travelers visiting Rwanda.

The Three Main Fishing Styles on Lake Kivu
Around Kibuye (Karongi), Gisenyi (Rubavu), and Rusizi, fishermen use three different techniques to catch fish. Each method tells its own story of skill, teamwork, and tradition.
1. Sambaza Fishing ; The Night Tradition of Lights and Songs
Best Time: At sunset or before sunrise
Fishing Method: Light attraction and deep-water net fishing
Sambaza are small silver fish, similar to sardines, and the most common catch on Lake Kivu.
At night, three wooden canoes are tied together with a large net hanging between them.
How it works:
•Fishermen lower a large net into the lake.
•The middle boat hangs bright lamps to attract aquatic insects.
•After 2–3 hours, Sambaza swim toward the light to feed.
•The fishermen pull ropes attached to poles to raise the edges of the net, trapping the fish inside.
This method lights up the lake at night. The sound of fishermen’s songs, the glow of lanterns, and the rhythm of teamwork create an unforgettable scene, perfect for photos and real cultural experience.

2. Tilapia Fishing; Calm Daytime Experience
Best Time: Morning or afternoon
Fishing Method: Gill nets (direction nets)
Tilapia fishing is done in daylight using gill nets placed at chosen locations in the lake.
•Fishermen stretch the nets in the water and leave them for a few hours.
•Fish that try to swim through become caught by their gills.
•The nets are then lifted back to collect the fish.
This is a calm, slow process that allows travelers to watch and even join the local fishermen. The quiet of the lake and the open horizon make it an excellent daytime activity.

3. Line Fishing – The Simplicity of Hook and Line
Best Time: Any time of day
Fishing Method: Hand-line fishing
Line fishing is the simplest and most personal method. Fishermen use a line and hook with bait , often a worm or insect.
When the fish bites and swallows the bait, it becomes hooked, and the fisherman carefully pulls the line by hand.
This method is perfect for beginners or anyone who enjoys a peaceful and patient fishing moment.

The Highlight ; Sambaza Night Fishing
If you want to experience the best of Lake Kivu’s fishing culture, choose Sambaza Night Fishing.
At sunset, fishermen prepare their boats and nets, singing together as they paddle out to their fishing area or early morning before sunrise. The lights reflect beautifully on the surface, creating one of the most photogenic moments you can witness in Rwanda.
You can also join early in the morning to watch how they lift the nets full of shimmering silver fish as the sun rises.
