Night Fishing on Lake kivu

Nigh fishing and Sunset in Lake Kivu, what to do in Rwanda

As the sun sets over the green hills of western Rwanda, the calm water of Lake Kivu begin to glow softly. Around 5:00 PM, local fishermen start their journey for night fishing, one of the lake’s most beautiful and living traditions.

It is not only about catching fish, it is about teamwork, singing, and sharing the evening in rhythm with nature.

The Boats and Their Roles

Each fishing group uses three wooden canoes that are tied together with long poles:

• Ishaba; the side boat where they keep the fishing nets

• Kati; the middle boat where they hang the lanterns

• Ijyiza; the other side boat that helps keep the balance

Each canoe carries three fishermen, and every man has his own line to pull. They work together carefully, lifting the big nets at the same time to stop the fish from escaping.

When they leave the shore, the evening is still clear with soft sunset light. They don’t use lanterns yet. Instead, they paddle through the quiet water while singing loudly.

Their songs are full of spirit, they tease, joke, praise their loved ones, and show their strength. The singing keeps them motivated and helps them paddle together in perfect rhythm.

Reaching the Fishing Place

When they reach the chosen fishing area, the fishermen lower their wide nets into the lake. Then they light the lanterns hanging from the middle canoe, Kati.

The bright lights attract aquatic insects, which soon draw small silver fish called sambaza, the main catch of the night. Along with sambaza, they sometimes catch cichlids, tilapia, and catfish, depending on the season.

The canoes are then anchored to keep them steady and prevent them from being blown away by the wind. The fishermen wait for about two hours, watching the gentle reflections of their lanterns on the calm water.
