Rwanda is a small country in East Africa known for its beautiful nature, wildlife, and strong culture. In September 2023, the UNESCO added two important places in Rwanda to the World Heritage List. This list includes special places around the world that must be protected because of their natural beauty or historical importance.

Rwandaโ€™s World Heritage Sites show both the countryโ€™s amazing nature and its important history.

1. Nyungwe National Park

Recognized by UNESCO: 2023

Nyungwe National Park is located in the southwest of Rwanda. It is one of the oldest rainforests in Africa and one of the most important forests for wildlife.

The park is home to many animals and plants, including:

โ€ข 13 species of primates, such as chimpanzees and colobus monkeys

โ€ข More than 300 species of birds

โ€ข Many types of trees and plants

Nyungwe is also famous for the canopy walk, a long suspension bridge above the forest where visitors can enjoy beautiful views.

UNESCO recognized Nyungwe because it protects a large and healthy rainforest that is important for wildlife and nature conservation.

The four memorial sites are:

โ€ข Kigali Genocide Memorial

โ€ข Murambi Genocide Memorial

โ€ข Bisesero Genocide Memorial

These places help visitors understand what happened in 1994 and why unity and reconciliation are important for Rwanda and the world.

Why These Sites Are Important
