In 2023, UNESCO officially recognized a group of sites called “Genocide Memorial Sites of Rwanda” as a World Heritage Site. These memorials honor the victims of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

The World Heritage property includes four memorial locations:
1. Kigali Genocide Memorial
2. Nyamata Genocide Memorial
3. Murambi Genocide Memorial
4. Bisesero Genocide Memorial
About Kigali Genocide Memorial
Located in Kigali, the memorial:
• Preserves the history of the 1994 genocide
• Contains mass graves where more than 250,000 victims are buried
• Offers exhibitions that educate visitors about genocide prevention and peace.
Today, the memorial is one of the most visited places in Rwanda, especially for people who want to understand the country’s history and reconciliation journey.
