Isumo Waterfall is a scenic natural attraction located within Nyungwe Forest National Park in southwestern Rwanda. It is one of the country’s most notable waterfalls, drawing visitors for its lush rainforest setting, biodiversity, and accessibility from popular eco-tourism routes near Gisakura.

Natural Setting

The sound of cascading water contrasts with the forest’s quiet canopy, making it a highlight of Nyungwe’s nature trails.
Visitor experience
Hiking to Isumo Waterfall typically begins at the Gisakura Visitor Centre or the nearby Uwinka Reception Centre. Guided walks are required, both for safety and conservation reasons. The moderately challenging path descends into a valley before reaching the misty plunge pool at the base of the falls. Visitors often combine the hike with tea plantation visits or canopy walks nearby.
Ecological significance
Isumo Waterfall contributes to Nyungwe’s network of streams that feed into the Congo and Nile river basins. The surrounding habitat supports endemic species and plays a role in maintaining local hydrological balance.
