If you’re looking for a peaceful adventure with a touch of magic, kayaking on Lake Kivu is the perfect escape. I joined a guided trip with Visit Lake Kivu Boat Tours and Adventure, and it turned out to be one of the most beautiful and unique experiences of my life. Here’s how the day unfolded:
Starting Point Environmental Museum, Kibuye
Our journey began at the Environmental Museum in Kibuye, a calm and green place near the lake. It was the perfect spot to get ready, meet our guide, and learn a little about the area. After a short safety talk, we hopped into our kayaks and started paddling on the clean & peaceful water of Lake Kivu.
Through the Trees The Small Forest
We followed the shoreline past a small forest. Birds sang in the trees, and the gentle sound of water made it feel like we were far from the busy world. It was calm, quiet, and perfect for taking deep breaths and enjoying the beauty of nature.
A Surprise Along the Way The Swimming Cows

Yes, you read that right swimming cows! We saw a group of cows walking into the lake and enjoying the cool water. Their herders were nearby on land, smiling as we passed by. It was such a funny and unexpected moment something you don’t see every day!
Nyenyeri Island Monkeys from the Kayak
Next, we paddled close to Nyenyeri Island, which is home to playful monkeys. We didn’t get out of our kayaks, but we saw the monkeys jumping in the trees and watching us from a distance. It felt like they were just as curious about us as we were about them!
Bird Paradise King and Queen Islands
Then came the beautiful King and Queen Islands. These two small islands are quiet and green and full of colorful birds! As we paddled around them, we spotted:
• Egyptian Geese
• Ibis
• Cormorants
• Kingfishers
• …and many more beautiful birds flying and singing all around us.
It was like kayaking through a birdwatcher’s dream!
The Grand Finale Lake Kivu Sunset

Just when we thought the day couldn’t get any better, the sun started to set. The sky turned golden, pink, and purple, and the whole lake looked like a painting. We stopped paddling and just floated for a while, watching the sun disappear behind the hills. It was peaceful, quiet, and full of beauty a perfect ending to a perfect day.
